In the historic town of Hilversum, Studio Vahid transformed a 1930s residence into a contemporary home that honors its original character while embracing calm modernity. The renovation focused on proportion, craftsmanship, and light—merging refined geometry with the warmth of tactile materials. The result is a home that feels quietly composed: an intersection of heritage and minimalism, designed for modern life yet rooted in timeless elegance. The design began with a clear intent—to bring lightness and flow into a traditionally compartmentalized house. Existing structural lines were preserved but refined, allowing natural light to extend deeper into the plan. Custom oak joinery and muted plaster walls establish continuity across rooms, while expressive artwork and sculptural furniture punctuate the calm with character. Each space feels distinct yet connected, composed through harmony rather than symmetry. The living area anchors the design narrative. A soft cream sofa and sculptural coffee tables sit beneath modernist artwork that adds rhythm and abstraction. Natural travertine and oak surfaces layer warmth over a restrained palette. The interplay between matte and reflective textures—linen upholstery, smoked glass, and natural stone—creates an atmosphere both sophisticated and inviting. Evening light filters through tall windows, softening the edges of the architecture and revealing the tactile depth of the materials. The open kitchen and dining room were reimagined as a single social volume, organized around a travertine-clad island and framed by sculptural brass lighting. Smooth plaster walls contrast with dark timber cabinetry and graphic art, creating a measured balance between simplicity and expression. The dining space continues the dialogue of contrasts—glass, leather, and wood forming a warm modern composition that bridges everyday use and quiet refinement. In the master suite, soft textiles, custom wall panels, and deep green accents define a restful sanctuary. The palette remains understated, enhanced by subtle brass detailing and handcrafted bedside tables. The geometry of the headboard and the glow of warm lighting bring intimacy and proportion to the space—creating a serene environment for rest and reflection. A tailored study sits between the social and private zones of the home. Shelves of dark oak hold an eclectic collection of art and books, while a mid-century lounge chair defines the corner as both workspace and retreat. The atmosphere is intellectual yet comfortable—designed for quiet focus and creative flow. Every decision in House 35 was guided by Studio Vahid’s belief that design should reveal calm, not excess. By paring down form and celebrating material honesty, the renovation created a home that feels both grounded and contemporary. The result is not a reinvention but a refinement—a timeless space where proportion, tactility, and emotion align.
